"Ed and Martha Wright approached me for help with a problem that concerns horse owners across North America; how to effectively treat both gastric ("foregut") and duodenal ("hindgut") ulcers. "Ed and Martha Wright approached me for help with a problem that concerns horse owners across North America; how to effectively treat both gastric ("foregut") and duodenal ("hindgut") ulcers. My experience indicates that the commonly accepted wisdom that 80% of horses in training have or will develop foregut ulcers ignores the equally serious problem of hindgut disorders.
Unfortunately, this is because the leading drugs do not allow both to be treated at the same time. Treatments for the hindgut require acid to develop a healing coating over the ulcer, while treatments for the foregut work by stopping acid production.
